Sofiane Diop has made his intentions clear: he wants to earn his place back in the Morocco national team, and he knows exactly what it will take.
In an interview with Radio France Internationale (RFI), the Moroccan international reflected on his decision to represent the Atlas Lions despite being born in France to a Senegalese father and a Moroccan mother. Eligible to represent three different countries, the midfielder ultimately chose Morocco three years ago, motivated by a desire to reconnect with his maternal roots and discover more of his Moroccan heritage.
Today, he remains proud of that decision and determined to make his mark on the international stage again.
Why Diop Chose Morocco Over France and Senegal
For Diop, choosing Morocco was about more than football. It was also a personal journey towards understanding his family background and strengthening his connection with Moroccan culture.
Having grown accustomed to visiting Senegal, he explained that he wanted to become closer to the Moroccan side of his identity.
- “I wanted to discover more about Moroccan culture. Since I was used to visiting Senegal, I wanted to get closer to my Moroccan culture,” he explained.
The decision was not an easy one. Diop acknowledged that he spent considerable time thinking about his international future, knowing that choosing Morocco did not mean abandoning his emotional connection to Senegal.
- “It was a very difficult decision, but it doesn't take anything away from my love for Senegal. I am Senegalese, and that is something I know within myself. But when it came to choosing a national team, I had to make a decision, and I chose Morocco.”
His words reflect the personal significance behind his international commitment, which goes beyond the sporting opportunities available to him.
No Regrets About Representing the Atlas Lions
Three years after making his decision, Diop insists that he has no regrets.
On the contrary, the midfielder described his choice as a source of pride, particularly for his family and close friends.
- “It's a feeling of pride for everyone, my family and my friends. I am very happy that I chose Morocco,” he said.
His comments underline the importance of representing a country with which he shares a strong family connection. For Diop, wearing the Moroccan shirt has become a meaningful part of his footballing identity.
Club Performances Are the Key to His Return
While his commitment to Morocco remains unquestioned, Diop understands that securing a regular place in the national team is a different challenge.
Competition within the Atlas Lions squad is intense, with several talented players fighting for opportunities across the midfield and attacking positions.
The 26-year-old knows that his performances at club level will ultimately determine whether he receives another opportunity to represent Morocco.
- “My objective is to maintain a consistently high level of performance. What I do at club level is extremely important. There is tremendous competition within the Atlas Lions, and the only way to get into the national team is by performing well for your club. I know exactly what I need to do now.”
That message reflects a clear approach: focus on consistency, deliver strong performances and allow his football to speak for itself.
A Place in Morocco's Plans Still to Be Earned
For the Atlas Lions, Diop represents another technically gifted option who could strengthen the team's attacking and midfield depth.
However, with competition for places continuing to grow, every international opportunity must be earned through performances and consistency.
The midfielder appears fully aware of that reality. Rather than relying on his previous international appearances or his personal commitment to Morocco, he is focused on improving at club level and proving that he deserves another call-up.
His ambition is straightforward: return to the national team and contribute to Morocco's objectives.
Sofiane Diop has already made his international choice. Now, he wants his performances to give him another opportunity to wear the Atlas Lions shirt.
