After two wins against Gabon and Lesotho in AFCON 2027 qualifying, Morocco face Mali in Tangier on Sunday in their final match of the international break.

The Atlas Lions will conclude their September-October international window this Sunday, October 4, with a friendly against Mali at the Grand Stade de Tanger.

After opening the break with two competitive fixtures in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, this encounter offers Mohamed Ouahbi another opportunity to test his squad against a stronger opponent and continue fine-tuning his team.

Morocco Enter the Match With Six Points

Morocco have made an ideal start to their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.

The national team defeated Gabon 2–0 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat before securing another 2–0 victory over Lesotho in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Two wins, six points and a strong position in the group have given the Atlas Lions plenty of confidence heading into their final fixture of the window.

The meeting with Mali, however, will provide a different kind of challenge.

A Late Change to the International Schedule

The original plan was for Morocco to face Ghana in Tangier, but the match was cancelled after difficulties surrounding the Ghanaian national team and its federation.

Ghana were also left without a head coach following the departure of Carlos Queiroz, adding further uncertainty around the team.

Mali had initially been scheduled to face Tunisia, but the Tunisian Football Federation cancelled that fixture at short notice, creating the opportunity for the friendly in Tangier to go ahead.

A Stronger Test for the Atlas Lions

The opposition should provide Ouahbi with a more demanding test.

Mali have also begun their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign strongly, collecting two victories from their opening matches. Their squad possesses considerable physical strength, technical quality and experience, making them capable of causing problems for Morocco.

The two sides are also familiar with one another.

Their most recent meeting came at AFCON 2025, when they drew 1–1 in Rabat during the group stage. The closely contested encounter underlined the competitive nature of this matchup.

Ouahbi Faces Another Selection Decision

Beyond the result, the friendly will be particularly interesting because of the decisions facing the Moroccan coach.

Ouahbi has rotated his squad during the first two matches of the international window, giving opportunities to several players while continuing to assess his options.

The question now is whether he will field a stronger starting lineup in Tangier or use the friendly to continue his squad rotation and give further minutes to players looking to establish themselves.

The starting XI could therefore provide an important indication of the coach's plans for the next stage of Morocco's development.

When and Where to Watch Morocco vs Mali

The Atlas Lions will face Mali on Sunday, October 4, at the Grand Stade de Tanger.

Kick-off: 18:00 GMT

With two qualifying victories already secured, Morocco will now look to close the international window with another positive performance against a Mali side expected to provide a much tougher examination.
