Morocco’s U23 national team were held to a 1–1 draw by Mali on Thursday at Stade Moulay El Hassan as the Atlas Cubs continued their preparations for the upcoming AFCON qualifying campaign.
The friendly provided another opportunity for the coaching staff to assess the squad ahead of two important matches against Ethiopia in November.
Bouhamdi Breaks the Deadlock
Morocco took the lead in the 37th minute, with Amir Bouhamdi finding the back of the net to give the hosts an advantage before the break.
The goal rewarded Morocco’s efforts during the first half and gave the team a positive platform heading into the second period.
However, Mali managed to respond and eventually levelled the contest, leaving the two sides sharing the spoils at the final whistle.
An Important Test Ahead of November
The friendly formed part of Morocco’s preparations for the first round of the AFCON qualifiers, with the national team scheduled to face Ethiopia over two matches in November.
The qualifiers will determine Morocco’s path toward the continental tournament, which is scheduled to take place in Egypt.
For the coaching staff, the meeting with Mali offered valuable competitive minutes and another chance to assess the squad before the more important fixtures arrive.
Building Toward the Qualifiers
Although the result did not produce a victory, the encounter provided useful preparation against another African side.
With the November qualifiers approaching, Morocco will have further opportunities to refine their tactical approach, evaluate their options and build greater cohesion within the squad.
The draw in Rabat marks another step in that preparation as the Atlas Lions continue working toward their next competitive challenge.
