Azzedine Ounahi was named the official Man of the Match after producing a match-winning performance in Morocco’s 3-0 victory over Canada in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Moroccan midfielder scored twice in the second half to guide the Atlas Lions into the quarter-finals, helping Mohamed Ouahbi’s side overcome a difficult first-half display against a determined Canadian team.
Canada started the match brightly, pressing high and creating several dangerous opportunities.
Morocco struggled to impose its usual possession-based style, relying heavily on defensive organization and the heroics of goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to keep the score level before halftime.
With the match still goalless after the opening 45 minutes, Morocco emerged with renewed confidence after the break.
Ounahi broke the deadlock in the 50th minute after a well-worked attacking move, finishing calmly to give the Atlas Lions a crucial lead and completely change the momentum of the game.
Canada responded by pushing forward in search of an equalizer, but Morocco remained compact defensively while creating dangerous opportunities on the counterattack.
The midfielder struck again in the 82nd minute, completing his brace and effectively ending Canada's hopes of a comeback.
Substitute Soufiane Rahimi added a third goal deep into stoppage time to seal an emphatic 3-0 victory and send Morocco into the last eight.
Ounahi Leads Morocco's Response
After receiving the Man of the Match award, Ounahi praised the entire squad for their collective effort and thanked Moroccan supporters for their unwavering backing throughout the tournament.
He said seeing Moroccans support the Atlas Lions wherever they play gives the players extra motivation and described the celebrations following every victory as a source of immense pride.
The midfielder also thanked the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and expressed his appreciation for the continued support provided under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
Quarter-Final Awaits
Morocco will now discover its quarter-final opponent following the match between France and Paraguay.
If France advances, it would set up a rematch of the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-final, where Les Bleus ended Morocco's historic run in Qatar.
Regardless of the opponent, the Atlas Lions continue to demonstrate that they belong among the world's elite, with another disciplined and clinical performance carrying them one step closer to another historic World Cup achievement.
