Moroccan football may have discovered another exceptional talent in Abdellah Ouazane, whose rapid rise at Ajax Amsterdam has attracted praise from French sports newspaper L’Équipe.
In a profile titled “Abdellah Ouazane, la nouvelle pépite du Maroc,” the publication highlights the teenager’s technical ability, tactical intelligence and growing importance in Morocco’s footballing future. At only 17, the young midfielder is already progressing through the ranks at one of Europe’s most renowned development clubs while beginning his journey with the senior national team.
His emergence has generated considerable excitement in Morocco, where supporters are increasingly looking towards the next generation of players capable of carrying the Atlas Lions forward.
From Amsterdam to the Atlas Lions
Born in Amsterdam in January 2009, Ouazane developed his footballing foundations in the Netherlands and represented both Dutch and Moroccan youth teams before choosing to commit his international future to the country of his parents.
That decision has placed him at the heart of Morocco’s ambitions to nurture young talent and bring promising players into the senior setup at an early stage of their development.
His breakthrough on the international stage came at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Under-17, hosted by Morocco. Ouazane played a leading role in the national team’s successful campaign, earning the tournament’s Best Player award as the young Atlas Lions lifted the continental trophy.
Morocco defeated Mali in the final after a goalless draw, winning 4-2 on penalties. For the midfielder, the triumph represented a major milestone and established him as one of the standout prospects of his generation.
A Senior Debut That Made History
The transition from youth international to senior football has already begun. Under head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, Ouazane made his debut for the Atlas Lions on September 25 in Rabat, featuring in Morocco’s 2-0 victory over Gabon, according to L’Équipe.
The appearance placed him among the youngest players ever to represent Morocco in an official match. The newspaper reports that he became the second-youngest, behind Hachim Mastour, who made his debut at 16 against Libya in 2015.
For a player still in his teens, stepping into the senior international environment represents a significant opportunity to learn from more experienced teammates and adapt to the demands of elite football.
His early involvement also reflects the confidence placed in his potential, although his continued progression will depend on gaining experience and developing consistently at club and international level.
Ajax Recognise His Potential
Ouazane’s development has followed an accelerated path in Amsterdam. During the 2024–25 season, he was promoted to Ajax’s Under-19 side despite his young age, giving him the chance to compete against older and more physically developed opponents.
A possible move to Real Madrid had reportedly been considered towards the end of that period. Instead, Ajax integrated him into the first-team setup in the summer of 2026 under Spanish coach Miguel Ángel Sánchez Muñoz, known as Míchel.
The club’s decision offered the Moroccan teenager a route towards senior football within an environment known for developing technically gifted players.
He made an immediate impression in the Eredivisie, scoring on his first official appearance for Ajax’s first team on August 16. After winning possession high up the pitch, he produced a curling strike from outside the penalty area, sending the ball into the top corner.
It was the kind of moment that can capture attention, but the greater challenge will be turning that early promise into regular contributions at senior level.
Technical Quality and Tactical Intelligence
Beyond the goals and headlines, L’Équipe places particular emphasis on the midfielder’s understanding of the game.
Nabil Baha, his former Morocco Under-17 coach, praised his technical and tactical qualities, describing his football intelligence as exceptionally advanced for his age.
That intelligence is an important part of Ouazane’s profile. Comfortable operating in central areas, he can contribute as a box-to-box midfielder or in a more advanced attacking role, where his ability to read spaces and link play can influence his team’s build-up.
Ajax have also used him on the wings, exposing him to different tactical demands and encouraging him to improve his pace, defensive recovery and versatility.
While those experiences broaden his options, the central midfield positions remain the areas in which he appears most comfortable, allowing him to influence possession and connect the defensive and attacking phases.
Aiming for Morocco’s 2030 World Cup
Ouazane’s ambitions extend beyond his early achievements. With Morocco set to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, the tournament offers a long-term target for a player whose career is only beginning.
By then, the teenager will have had several years to develop at club level, gain international experience and compete for a regular place in the Atlas Lions squad.
The prospect of representing Morocco at a home World Cup is an exciting possibility, but the immediate priority remains steady progress at Ajax and continued development within the national-team structure.
For now, the praise from L’Équipe adds to the growing attention surrounding one of Morocco’s most promising young midfielders. His achievements at Under-17 level, early exposure to senior international football and first-team opportunities in Amsterdam have given him a strong platform.
His talent is undeniable, and his continued development could shape a bright future for both Ajax and the Atlas Lions.
