Morocco will continue their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign against Lesotho on Tuesday, September 29, with the match taking place far from Lesotho’s home territory.
The two nations will meet at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, South Africa, after Lesotho were forced to move their home fixtures across the border because their national stadiums do not meet the CAF requirements for hosting international matches.
For the Atlas Lions, it will be another important step in the qualifying campaign following their opening victory over Gabon.
A Stadium in the Heart of Bloemfontein
The Toyota Stadium is located in Bloemfontein, the capital of South Africa’s Free State province.
The city, often associated with sport and football, is home to one of the region’s most recognizable sporting venues.
The stadium currently carries the Toyota name following a naming-rights agreement, having previously been known for many years as the Free State Stadium.
It can accommodate approximately 41,000 spectators and is the home ground of Marumo Gallants.
A FIFA World Cup 2010 Venue
The stadium carries particular historical significance because it was one of the South African venues selected to host matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
That tournament transformed several stadiums across South Africa, and Bloemfontein was part of that global football spectacle.
The venue has also hosted matches involving the South African national team, including World Cup qualifying fixtures, as well as international encounters involving other African sides.
For Morocco, Tuesday's game will therefore take place in a stadium with considerable experience of major international football.
Why Lesotho Are Playing in South Africa
The choice of venue is not simply a preference from the Lesotho Football Association.
Lesotho's national stadiums currently do not satisfy the infrastructure and facility requirements set by the Confederation of African Football for international fixtures.
As a result, the Likuena have had to stage their home matches outside the country.
The Lesotho Football Association formally submitted Toyota Stadium as the venue for the meeting with Morocco, and the stadium received approval to host the fixture.
That means Lesotho will technically be the home side on the match sheet, but the game will be played across the border in neighboring South Africa.
Morocco Arrive With Three Points Already Secured
The Atlas Lions head into the fixture after making a positive start to their qualifying campaign.
Mohamed Ouahbi's side defeated Gabon 2–0 in Rabat, with Noussair Mazraoui opening the scoring before Soufiane Rahimi sealed the victory late in the second half.
The result gave Morocco an early three points and placed them in a strong position at the beginning of the group campaign.
The challenge now is to carry that momentum into their first away fixture.
