Yassine Bounou finished eighth in the 2026 Yashin Trophy standings at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, missing out on a place among the leading contenders for the award presented to the season’s outstanding goalkeeper.
The Moroccan international, who represents Al-Hilal at club level and the Atlas Lions internationally, has previously enjoyed stronger finishes in the prestigious rankings. This year’s result marks a step back from his recent appearances among the award’s leading candidates.
Nevertheless, his continued presence among the nominees reflects his standing in international football and his reputation as one of Morocco’s most recognisable players.
Unai Simón Takes Home the Yashin Trophy
Spain international Unai Simón, goalkeeper for Athletic Club and the Spanish national team, was named the 2026 Yashin Trophy winner.
The award recognises the goalkeeper judged to have delivered the strongest performances over the season, placing Simón ahead of an impressive field of contenders.
David Raya, Arsenal’s goalkeeper and a Premier League champion during the 2025–26 campaign, finished among the leading three, alongside Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid and Belgium.
Their positions underline the competition for one of football’s most prestigious individual goalkeeper honours.
Bounou’s Previous Yashin Trophy Finishes
Although eighth place represents a lower finish than in previous editions, Bounou has already established himself among the award’s notable contenders.
The Moroccan goalkeeper finished third in 2023, following his outstanding performances at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He subsequently placed fifth in the previous edition.
His third-place finish in 2023 remains his best result in the Yashin Trophy rankings to date.
That achievement followed a memorable World Cup campaign in which Bounou played a crucial role in Morocco’s historic run to the semi-finals, helping the Atlas Lions become the first African team to reach that stage.
A Moroccan Goalkeeper Who Has Made History
For Moroccan football supporters, Bounou’s international achievements remain an important part of the country’s growing reputation on the global stage.
His performances for Morocco and at club level have helped establish him among the most prominent African goalkeepers of his generation.
While eighth place in 2026 may not match his previous podium finish, the Al-Hilal shot-stopper remains a key figure for the Atlas Lions as they look ahead to their next international challenges.
Unai Simón takes the spotlight this year, but Bounou’s World Cup legacy remains one of the defining achievements in Moroccan football history.
