Tawfik Bentayeb has explained the reason behind his absence from Morocco’s opening AFCON 2027 qualifier against Gabon, following his return to the national team during Sunday's friendly against Mali in Tangier.

The Anderlecht striker expressed his happiness at being back with the Atlas Lions and his pride at playing in front of Moroccan supporters at the Grand Stade de Tanger.

He also praised the professional environment surrounding the national team camp, highlighting the high-quality working conditions throughout the two-week international window.

A Return in Front of the Moroccan Fans

Bentayeb made his return against Mali in a competitive friendly that ended 1–1, giving him another opportunity to build his match fitness and reconnect with the national team.

The forward spoke positively about the atmosphere in Tangier and the support from the Moroccan fans, describing the experience as an important part of his return.

The international window also provided valuable preparation ahead of Morocco's upcoming continental commitments.

A Difficult Test Against Mali

Reflecting on the 1–1 draw, the Anderlecht forward described the encounter as a demanding and closely contested match.

The strength of the opposition and the tactical battle between the two teams made it a difficult test, but he was satisfied with Morocco's overall performance.

The squad, he explained, remains highly focused on improving its football, correcting tactical details and continuing its preparation for the major competitions ahead.

Why He Missed the Gabon Opener

Bentayeb also clarified why he was unavailable for Morocco's 2–0 victory over Gabon.

His absence was linked to a minor head injury, which required him to follow the medical protocol established by FIFA.

According to the striker, the injury meant he had to undergo a mandatory recovery period of approximately seven to ten days as a precaution for his safety.

Rather than taking any unnecessary risks, the medical staff followed the required protocol before gradually allowing him to return to football.

Back on the Pitch Against Lesotho and Mali

After completing the necessary recovery period, Bentayeb was able to return progressively.

He featured during the international window against Lesotho and later against Mali, allowing him to regain rhythm while remaining under appropriate medical supervision.

His return gives Mohamed Ouahbi another attacking option as Morocco continue building towards their next major international challenges.

Looking Ahead to the Next Chapter

The September-October international window provided Bentayeb with an important opportunity to return to the national team environment after his brief absence.

With his injury now behind him, the focus can turn back to club football and maintaining the form that earned him his place in the Atlas Lions squad.

For the 24-year-old, the focus now is on staying fit, building momentum and being ready for Morocco’s next major challenge.
