Ilias Akhomach's future has become clearer.
The 22-year-old Morocco international will remain at Villarreal after the Spanish club informed him that he features prominently in their plans for the new season and remains an important part of their sporting project.
The decision effectively closes the door on a move to Espanyol, who had previously identified Akhomach as a potential reinforcement for their wing positions.
Villarreal Make Their Position Clear
Espanyol had been strongly interested in Akhomach, with the Catalan club previously considering him alongside Spain international Bryan Zaragoza as they looked to strengthen their attacking options.
Their interest was not new either, with Espanyol having explored the possibility of signing the Moroccan during the previous winter transfer window.
Akhomach ultimately chose a different path at the time, joining Rayo Vallecano on loan.
A Crucial Step After Injury
The move to Rayo provided Akhomach with an important opportunity to rebuild his rhythm following the serious knee injury he suffered toward the end of 2024.
He gradually regained his competitive sharpness, making 16 appearances and helping Rayo reach the final of the Conference League.
The experience represented another important stage in his development as he worked his way back toward his best level.
A New Chapter at Villarreal
With the summer bringing changes to Villarreal's coaching staff, Akhomach's future initially remained uncertain.
Interest from Spanish and foreign clubs kept speculation alive, but the picture has changed significantly in recent days as the Moroccan winger has increasingly gained the confidence of coach Iñigo Pérez.
Akhomach has already featured in Villarreal's preseason preparations, including the club's 2-1 victory over Galatasaray, before also appearing in their opening La Liga match against Racing.
His involvement has provided another strong indication that Villarreal see him as part of their plans.
Competition for a Starting Role
Remaining at Villarreal will now present Akhomach with an exciting challenge: earning a regular starting position in a competitive attacking group.
The Moroccan is expected to compete primarily for a role on the right wing, where he faces competition from Nicolas Pépé, while the opposite flank also features several options.
That competition could provide Akhomach with exactly the environment he needs as he continues rebuilding his momentum.
Another Opportunity to Shine
For Akhomach, staying in Villarreal represents more than simply the end of transfer speculation.
It is an opportunity to establish himself at a club that has now made its confidence in him clear and to show that the difficult chapter following his injury is firmly behind him.
The door to Espanyol may be closed, but a new door is opening at Villarreal, and Akhomach now has the chance to walk through it and make his mark.
