Abdellah Ouazane delivered a moment to remember on Thursday night, scoring his first goal in European competition as Ajax defeated Atalanta 2-0 at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

The 17-year-old Moroccan midfielder entered the match in the 62nd minute and made his presence felt when Ajax needed a decisive contribution. After struggling to turn their dominance into goals, the Dutch giants finally found their breakthrough in the closing stages before the young Moroccan sealed the victory with a spectacular finish.

Ouazane Lights Up Amsterdam with Stunning Finish

Ajax broke the deadlock in the 87th minute through Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare, giving the home supporters the breakthrough they had been waiting for.

Six minutes later, Ouazane delivered the decisive moment of the evening.

After receiving a headed pass from Arokodare, the Moroccan youngster drove into the penalty area, beat his defender and unleashed a powerful left-footed strike from a tight angle. The ball crashed against the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line, leaving Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi helpless.

It was a spectacular way for the teenager to open his European scoring account and a glimpse of the technical quality that has made him one of Morocco's most promising young prospects.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport after the match, the midfielder expressed his happiness while remaining grounded.

  • “It was a really nice goal, but we’re keeping our feet on the ground,” he said.

A Crucial Victory for Ajax

The result gave Ajax their first three points of the Conference League campaign after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Hajduk Split in their opening fixture.

With the pressure to respond following that setback, the Dutch side found the breakthrough late before Ouazane's individual brilliance put the result beyond doubt.

For the Amsterdam club, the victory offered an important boost. For the young Moroccan, it was an opportunity to demonstrate that he can make an impact at senior level when called upon.

From Ajax’s Academy to Morocco’s Rising Stars

Born in Amsterdam in January 2009, Ouazane joined Ajax's renowned youth academy in 2016, beginning a journey that has steadily brought him closer to the first team.

He signed his first professional contract with the club in August 2025, committing his future to Ajax until June 2028.

His development has also attracted attention through his performances for Morocco's youth national teams, where he has established himself as one of the country's exciting prospects.

In April 2025, he helped the Atlas Cubs win their first-ever U17 Africa Cup of Nations title, earning the tournament's Best Player award in recognition of his outstanding performances.

That achievement marked an important milestone in his young career, and his latest European display provides another reason for Moroccan supporters to follow his progress closely.

A Promising New Chapter for the Moroccan Talent

At just 17, Ouazane still has plenty of development ahead of him. However, scoring on the European stage in such spectacular fashion represents an encouraging step in his journey at one of the continent's most prestigious talent-producing clubs.

His combination of technical ability, confidence in attacking situations and experience with Morocco's youth setup offers plenty of reasons for optimism.

For the Atlas Cubs star, the challenge now is to build on this breakthrough, earn further opportunities with Ajax's senior side and continue translating his potential into performances.

One stunning finish has given Moroccan football another young talent to watch, and Ouazane will hope this is only the beginning.
